Last week I told you all about setting up a blog and what it is really like. This week it‘s all about the work.

The Content

This is probably the hardest part about having a blog. Creating good content is key to having a successful blog. This can be a challenge, especially when you are first starting out. To make your readers stay and come back, you need to have something for them to read right when your blog goes live. So the actual work starts long before you‘re even starting to set up your blog.

Choose a niche, which means a topic that you want to write about. This can be very broad, very narrow or something in between. If you realize, that what you are writing about isn‘t really working for you, you can still change your niche but you might lose some readers over that.

Once you started your blog it is important to post new content on a regular basis. This will help to make your blog perform better and your readers are more likely to come back.

The Marketing

Having a blog is fun, but it is even more fun if someone actually reads it. You can share it with friends and family but if you are planning on making money with your blog, you want to get a greater audience than that. Social media is your friend in this case.

  • Facebook
This is an easy way to share your articles with your friends and their friends. Post about once a day to not overwhelm your followers.
  • Instagram
Do you have great pictures or short videos on your blog? Share them on Instagram and tell your followers to check out the respective articles on your blog. You can post a couple of times a day (I try three times) and don‘t forget to follow others.
  • Pinterest
Let‘s be honest, if you are looking for a recipe, a DIY or any other new project, Pinterest is a great source. Pin a couple of times a day to get followers and get more pins of your own articles out there. It also helps to have more than one pin for each article. Don‘t forget to write a short description.
  • Twitter
It is fast-paced, up-to-date and when you get on the radar of the right people, it can do your blog a lot of good. Follow the right people and write engaging tweets. Share new and old articles up to five times a day. You could tweet more but this can easily annoy your followers and you might risk losing some. Pictures make your tweets even more attention grabbing.
  • Other great Social Media Channels include Youtube, Google+ and LinkedIn…

The Money Making

Making money with a blog is often what attracts people to start one but there is no guarantee how fast or if you are ever going to make money with your blog.

I‘m certainly not making big money with my blog yet but a couple of dollars here and there are starting to come in.

Here‘s what I‘m doing to earn a little extra (although not everything has brought in money yet):

  • Google Ads
Adsense is easily added to your blog and you get money if someone clicks on the ads and for every 1000 views.
  • Affiliate Marketing
Linking to products (for example on Amazon) can make you some money, if someone buys things through your link.
  • Ebooks
Publishing ebooks is pretty easy with Amazon and you can make money for read pages or completely downloaded books. (depending on prime customers and regular customers)
  • Other ways to make money: sell on Etsy, monetize videos or create an online seminar…

The Challenge

Blogging so far has been an interesting journey. It has taught me a lot about myself I might not be making a living with it right now but you never know what might happen in the future. I might sound like everyone who wants to talk you into blogging, but yes, try it yourself, you won‘t regret it. What doesn‘t kill you only makes you stronger 😉

Let me know if you have any questions. I am always happy to help.
